Hekate

About

She is the Greek goddess of witchcraft, magic, sorcery, necromancy, ghosts and crossroads. It is because of her association with magic, sorcery and witchcraft which makes her quite favoured among those who practice magic. She is often portrayed with three faces representing the Maiden-Mother-Crone as well as the phases of the moon.

She is the daughter of the Titans Perses And Asteria. Depending on the interpretation she is also considered to be the mother of Aeetes, Circe, Empusa, Pasiphae and Scylla. She is associated with paired torches, keys, daggers, dogs, serpents and the polecat as well as the Hecate wheel. Shrines dedicated to her were placed by the doorway of a home to protect the family from restless ghosts and other evil entities

Personal thoughts

Unlike with most Greek gods and goddesses she does not have many stories about her nor does she have many negative qualities. Though most people would jump to the conclusion that she might be wicked or mischievous, given the stereotypes about witches, she is more of a protector goddess as well as an educational one for those looking to practice magecraft. As stated previously she was used in homes, as well as in towns, to protect against restless spirits and was also the teacher of Medea one of the most famous, and misunderstood, witch of Greek mythology.

When to invoke

It is best to invoke Hekate during a full moon and at a cross road. It is best to invoke her when seeking to improve a persons proficiency in magecraft as well when dealing with the restless dead or from protection against evil spirits.
